چکیده

Follicular development is controlled partly by intra-ovarian and intrafollicular factors within the ovary and partly by extra-ovarian events. Many oocyte derived factors and granulose cell factors are also involved in follicle development. A better understanding of all the processes involved in follicular development regulated by growth factors will develop procedures to enhance the reproductive efficiency in domestic animals. The present article discussed the role of various growth factors involved in the follicle and ovum development, and biotechniques associated with oocyte development in domestic ruminants.

Growth Factors and Antral Follicular Development in Domestic Ruminants

Growth factors of endocrine and/or paracrine origin play determinant roles in antral follicular development. They modulate survival, proliferation and differentiation of follicular cells, acting in interaction with gonadotropins. It is thought that factors belonging to the families of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I and -II), epidennal growth factor (EGF and TGF-a) and fibroblast growth f...

Intrafollicular soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) and embryo quality in assisted reproduction.

The developmental potential of human embryos has important implications in assisted reproduction and depends, among other factors, on oocyte competency. The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a member of the superfamily of immunoglobulin cell-surface molecules that are constitutively expressed during embryonic development. RAGE is down-regulated in homeostasis in adult life....

Control of follicular growth: local interactions and nutritional influences.

Regulation of ovarian activity is an integrated process encompassing both extraovarian signals and intrafollicular factors. Initiation of primordial follicle growth and the early stages of folliculogenesis can occur without gonadotropins, but FSH may affect the rate of preantral follicle growth. Antral follicle development from 1 to 4 mm in sheep and cattle is completely gonadotropin dependent....

Maternal metabolic health and oocyte quality: the role of the intrafollicular environment

Reduced oocyte and embryo quality are currently recognized as key factors in the problem of disappointing fertility in high producing dairy cows, but also in women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment. This review aims to highlight the importance of intrafollicular conditions in the subfertility problem, topical in both bovine and human research. Metabolic disturbances, like a negative en...

The endocrine and local control of ovarian follicle development in the ewe

Follicle development can be divided into gonadotrophin-independent, gonadotrophin-responsive and gonadotrophin-dependent phases. The basic level of control of folliculogenesis lies with the actions of an extensively observed but poorly understood range of somatic and germ cell derived local factors that constitute an intrafollicular developmental cascade that regulates the proliferative and dif...
